Lech and Zurs
Internationally famous, Lech and Zurs are the most glamorous and expensive resorts in Austria
Offering arguably the best skiing in Austria, the resorts of Lech and Zurs are situated in the Arlberg ski area near the German border, with Zurich to the west and Innsbruck to the east. If you like to be seen, then try your luck in Lech. This charming village in Vorarlberg, Austria's westernmost state, is where the famous people come to be seen and sometimes... ski. They stay in five-star hotels, dine in the best of restaurants, and dominate the lively apres ski scene. However, if you come to ski, then you'll find many manicured slopes on ego-building terrain.
Six kilometre runs and 1000 metre verticals are amongst the possibilities in the ski circuit that connects Lech with Zurs, a smaller, quieter, even more exclusive resort. Groomed slopes in the area total more than 100 kilometres, with 32 lifts servicing them. The Arlberg ski pass that also includes St. Anton, St. Christoph and Stuben, more than double the territory and increasing the lifts to 83. Lech is one of 12 resorts in five alpine countries that claim to be 'The Best of the Alps.' The village shuttle bus services important lift stations, known as the 'Lecher Ortsbus' and is free with the ski lift pass or guestcard (until 7.00 pm daily).
Other resort activities include skating and curling (natural terrain); squash; indoor tennis; sleigh rides; snowboarding; helicopter skiing; and walking. For beginners there are gentle nursery slopes located besides the village and for intermediates there are idyllic wide open, long blue and red runs. There is also an abundance of terrain via the central Schlegelkopf lift opening up access to the scenic region of Oberlech. From the other side of Lech's centre, the Rüfikopf takes skiers up to the runs which connect with the Hexenboden slopes above Zürs. Lech is also an experienced skier's dream with probably the best, most challenging off-piste skiing in Austria. Superb black runs and off runs are available to sink your teeth into.
