Varingskollen / Oslo
Good skiing with Europe's biggest after ski area
The city of Oslo is uniquely surrounded by forest, mountains and the sea, offering great skiing and Europe's biggest after ski - the city itself! Varingskollen Ski Centre is located in Hakadel, only 30 minutes from Oslo. Varingskollen offers 6 slopes and floodlit night skiing until 10 pm each night Monday to Friday, as well as offering excellent snow conditions from December to April each year. The centre provides a wide range of activities such as slalom, carving, telemark, cross-country, snowboard and trick skiing - you name it they've got it! And for an exhilarating fun activity, try "Korketrekkeren', the 2 kilometre bobsleigh run meaning "the cork screw" running from Frognerseteren and all the way down the hill.
There are a number of downhill slopes to suit all ages and skill levels. In particular beginners and intermediates will find skiing in Oslo's resorts fun with long cruising runs to keep you occupied throughout the day. Advanced skiers will also fina a couple of challenging runs including Oslo´s black run, the Olaløypa with a length of 1200 metres with a drop of 330 metres. Oslo is great for families and has plenty of opportunities for children to test their skills on the snow and there is a free SunKid lift in the childrens area.
There is no other European city that has the wealth of cross country trails that Oslo offers. Cross country skiers have over 2,600 kilometres of well prepared and marked cross-country ski trails which run deep into the Oslo forest and 120 kilometres of these trails are floodlit until 11 pm each day, adding a feeling of romance and adventure that can only be described as a unique and wonderful experience. You will also find winter cabins deep in the forest that serve hot chocolate and freshly baked pastries, adding to a truly exceptional Norwegian cross country ski activity.
