Kranjska Gora
Great value skiing set amongst spectacular scenery
The Zgornjesavska Valley is one of the most breathtaking alpine valleys, with its centre of winter activity being the resort town of Kranjska Gora. The valley has developed into a major tourist and sports region and is hosting World Cup competitions in alpine skiing and ski jumping on the giant ski-jump in Planica. Skiing is by far the most popular sport in Kranjska Gora, with its sunny slopes, dominated by the Julian Alps. Located just a few miles from the Austrian and Italian borders and 60 kilometres from Ljubljana, the good skiing, combined with a range of other non-skiing activities, the friendly and laid-back attitude of the Slovenian people and the excellent value for money, all add up to make this resort a great ski holiday destination.
The compact lift system provides day and night skiing opportunities on a wide range of runs suitable for skiers of all levels. The snow-covered slopes of Vitranc will entice both the beginner and the experienced skier, as the ski runs vary from the very easy and child friendly to the steep competition runs in Podkoren. Snowboarders on the other hand are assured that there is no shortage of acrobatics. In Kranjska Gora visitors can also experience the thrill of skiing on unspoiled, virgin slopes with the breathtaking winter views as a backdrop. There are a number of opportunities for enthusiasts, ranging from the gentle downhill from the Karavanke summits to extreme skiing down the ridge of the Julian Alps accompanied by an experienced guide, who is a member of the Association of Slovenian Alpine Guides.
For non-skiers there are exciting excursions to beautiful Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj as well as to the spectacular Postojna caves. The nightlife in Kranjska Gora is made up of several bars, typical restaurants, discos and a casino for a more sophisticated evening. Resort attractions also include ice-skating, horse sleigh rides, sledding, ice climbing tennis and swimming.
